How many times have you sat down in your smoke-filled living room with some buddies to watch one of your favorite flicks? No need to admit to anything here, we’re talking about our favorite, most-quotable stoner movies. These are the movies that you’ve watched so many times you could reenact them in your backyard (and, be honest, you probably have), and I started each one off with my favorite quote from the film.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
“Learnin’ about Cuba, and havin’ some food!” Fast Times at Ridgemont High broke some serious ground with its fun-loving portrayal of Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn). His laid back, stoner surfer attitude inspired millions of cool dudes everywhere to bleach their hair blonde, order some pizza, and chill out.
“Daaaaaammmmmnnnn!” Craig (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker) fumble their way through an ill-fated Friday in South Central, LA. When Smokey accidentally smokes all of Big Worm’s pot (that he was supposed to sell) he and Craig have to come up with a scheme to make some money. Ambitious and hilarious, this movie’s got so many quotable lines it’s hard to know where to start.
Dude, Where’s My Car
“And thennnnnnn???” The quote that rings out from the drive-thru is from one of the most famous bits in stoner-movie history. Though our two hero definitely didn’t just imbibe in the devil’s weed, this is a go-to for stoners looking for a good time. And be honest, how many times have you partied so hard you forgot where you parked your car?
“I just lost a buck… to myself!” This story of five burnt out, woefully bored Vermont State Troopers puts a spin on the classic stoner flick. Instead of being about a bunch of surfers or drug dealers, it’s about the people sworn to protect and serve. But the only thing these guys are protecting and serving is themselves… and I love it!
Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke
“Is that a joint man? …looks like a quarter pounder!” The grandpa’s of stoner comedy. Where we would be without Cheech and Chong? Up in Smoke is their first and probably their best work, as it follows the two stoners trying to make it in the world. It ain’t easy, but they’ve got the right attitude to roll with the punches.
Evil Bong (available on CONtv)
“It’s just sitting there, bro. That’s what shells do.” Not only is Evil Bong one of the weirdest, goofiest premises of all time (an evil bong is… you know, being evil), it’s also terrifically quotable. Don’t believe me? Just listen to any line from Bachman, played by Mitch Eakins.
Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle
“Where are you going?” “Wherever God takes me.” If Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle taught me anything, it’s that you should never party with Neil Patrick Harris. Uh… oh, and also it taught me that friendship and the quest for tiny burgers can conquer racism, wild animals, and all sorts of terrible trouble. Who says you can’t learn anything from a stoner movie?
“Either someone’s having a party or someone gotta do they shirt laundry.” When a couple of stoners realize their buddy got arrested, they concoct a plan to raise enough bail money to get him out of jail. Sounds easy, right? Dave Chapelle, Guillermo Diaz, Jim Brewer, and Harland Williams absolutely crush it in this classic American stoner story. It doesn’t get much better than Half Baked.
Dazed and Confused
“You all ready to bust some ass!?” This star-studded, hilarious, at times heart-wrenching classic is the pinnacle of a stoner movie. It’s not always funny, but stoners aren’t just in it for the giggles. Written and directed by Richard Linklater, the famous flick follows the life of students on the last day of school in 1976. If you’ve ever stood up to authority, or admitted your feelings for a girl or guy you had a crush on, or gotten stoned and went to the arcade… this movie’s for you.
