Welcome to the weekly geekout. I’m here to bring attention to a few items each week worth geeking out about. Between the weekly onslaught of upcoming movies, awesome DVD releases, cool action figures and collectibles, and comics, it’s hard to keep everything straight. So check in every monday for a primer on what’s awesome this week.
Week of March 7th, 2016
Happy March, everyone! We’re now in the full swing of the season, and there are so many big tentpole events and geek-centric things to be excited about as we approach the summer. With Batman V. Superman on its way this month, conventions abound, and then summer movies spring always feels like the gatekeeper to geek paradise. What’s cool this week? Take a look!
Howard the Duck on Blu-Ray
Tuesday, March 8th
“FINALLY! Howard the Duck is on Blu-Ray!” Shouted no one but me… ever. Look, I get it. This movie is a mess, and it’s wonderfully weird, and there is humanoid-duck nudity in it… so that’s not great. But for as goofy and strange as Howard the Duck is, I’m really happy it exists. I’m not sure what types of special features this bad boy will be packing, but I’m excited.
Action Comics #50
Wednesday, March 9th
I’m not a huge Superman fan (gasp!), my complaints aren’t new ones, they’re the same complaints you’ll hear from anyone who hasn’t really spent time with the mythology of the hero. So I’m vowing, in preparation for Batman V. Superman, to get a bit more up to speed with the shining archetype of good. Max Landis’ Superman: American Alien is a series I’m very fond of, and I’m going to get into Action Comics and give that a try as well.
Reaction Rocky Horror Picture Show Figures
Wednesday, March 9th
Funko is at it again with these amazing retro-inspired action figures. I love how cheap they look, and I love how much detail goes into making these figures look like there’s not much detail. This new series collects figures from the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, including Brad Majors, Janet Weiss, Dr. Frank-N-Furter (pictured), Riff Raff, Magenta and Columbia. SICK.
10 Cloverfield Lane
Friday, March 11th
What is J.J. Abrams up to now? The trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane came out of nowhere and shocked the geek/horror community. The rumor floating around is that this movie is supposed to take place after the events of Cloverfield, and features a bunch of people (including John Goodman) stuck in a safety bunker. There’s no promise made here about how closely it relates to Cloverfield, though, and I’m warry to expect too much of a match (because there are also rumors that this was footage shot originally with no connection to Cloverfield). No matter what, the premise seems stressful and fun!
