Hot on the heels of the cinematic reveal teaser, WB Games and Netherrealm have released the first taste of Injustice 2 gameplay footage, showcasing some new characters and abilities being added to the Mortal Kombat-flavored fighter. Check it out below:
Right from the get-go, we see new combatants Supergirl and Atrocitus. The former is pretty much a no-brainer, as she not only adds an additional female character to the roster, but she’s also higher-profile thanks to the Supergirl TV show. Atrocitus, however, is a welcome surprise, although his rage-based Red Lantern powers are a fightin’ fit for the Injustice series. Amusingly, he’s flanked by Dex-Starr, a Red Lantern that’s also an abused housecat from Brooklyn. Really. Also, Supergirl’s shield bears an eerie resemblance to the shield from Tim Burton’s infamously failed Superman Lives!
Next up, we have Gorilla Grodd and Aquaman. This is Grodd as we know and love him, complete with body armor and a simian superiority complex. Aquaman isn’t really a huge surprise, as he was in the previous Injustice, and he’s also a much more high-profile character with his inclusion in the upcoming Justice League.
Finally, we’ve got Batman versus Superman, which we all knew was coming, although once again we get to see those crazy, multi-stage arenas that made Injustice a superpowered hoot, with characters smashing through walls and obstacles with a level of brutality and violence that makes sense for DC’s metahumans without resorting to the wanton gore of Mortal Kombat.
There are plenty of other little details sprinkled here and there, including multiple armor sets for each character (shades of Mortal Kombat X), and a few winking easter eggs here and there. One can plainly see Aquaman archnemesis Black Manta taking a cheap shot at the Atlantean king, but it’s not clear if he’s a playable character or a background character in a stage transition.
All in all, this looks about as awesome as one could hope, with Netherrealm once again trading features back and forth between Mortal Kombat and Injustice.
Injustice 2 will be released in 2017.
