Gears of War 3 neatly buttoned up the 4-part story of Marcus Fenix and Bravo Team, with the subterranean Locusts left leaderless and the human inhabitants of Sera looking forward to a war-free future.
To quote Robert Frost, “nothing gold can stay,” and once again the planet Sera is decimated by a mysterious threat which has to be dealt with by Marcus’ son JD Fenix and his team of next-generation COGs. Despite the 25-year time jump (methinks new developer The Coalition swiped a page from Mortal Kombat X’s playbook), the new trailer will be familiar for longtime fans, featuring a maudlin song—this time it’s Disturbed covering Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence”—layered over the horrors of war as only Gears of War can portray them.
Speaking of horror, I’m definitely getting a much stronger horror vibe from this trailer than the previous games, perhaps even exceeding the original game’s sense of dread. Although nothing, nothing can top that sense of hopeless terror that the Kryll swarms gave players…shudder. Also, there’s something inherently ridiculous about Marcus Fenix transplanting trees like a juiced-up Johnny Appleseed, holding entire trees on his shoulder like John Matrix in Commando.
Gears of War 4 will be released October 11th, 2016 on Xbox One.
